The work of an SLE

Specialist leaders of education (SLEs) will act as 'system leaders', supporting individual leaders and teams in other schools by using a high level coaching or facilitation approach that draws on their knowledge and expertise in their specialist area.

This may involve a wide variety of support approaches, including diagnostic models, and one-to-one or facilitated group support. Regardless of the type of support model delivered, the ultimate aim of SLEs will always be to contribute significantly to improving the outcomes for children through developing the capacity of peer leaders in other schools.

All SLEs are linked to a Teaching School who is responsible for their deployment. Prospective SLEs can apply to more than one Teaching School but can only be registered and deployed by one.

There is no pre-defined time commitment for a deployment, as models and types of deployments will vary. All of the deployments that we make are carried out with the agreement of the SLE's Head Teacher. Head Teachers are able to alter the amount of time they are happy for their staff to be out of school for.

We see engaging in s2s work as a key CPD opportunity for our SLEs and a useful tool for retention of experienced staff. As such even staff with only a small amount of capacity available for supporting other schools are encouraged to be involved.
